Best Celeb Cannabis Advocates to Dress Up as For Halloween

Every Halloween, Americans dress up en masse for the nation's premier spooky holiday. Many dress up as their favorite movie characters or fantasy creatures. Others will opt for cutesy couples' costumes or base their costume on some clever wordplay. Millions of other All Hallows’ Eve revelers will dress up as real-life people like athletes, politicians, singers, and anyone lucky—or unlucky—enough to be featured in the public zeitgeist when October 31st rolls around.

For cannabis enthusiasts who want to tie their Halloween costume to their passion for the good stuff, the options have traditionally been limited to the “stoner” Halloween costume. That requires a tie-dye shirt, a long wig, circular sunglasses, and a bead necklace, and maybe finish the look with some ratty sandals if it’s warm enough in your area. However, we’d argue that you’ve merely dressed up as a stereotypical caricature of a cannabis user from another decade. It’s a tired look, and greeting all the other partygoers with an overwrought "groovy, man!" is going to get old faster than you think.

This year, why not aim for a more creative cannabis costume? Before you wrap yourself from head to toe in toilet paper and go as the world's biggest joint (and are inevitably mistaken for a mummy), let’s focus on real-world celebrity cannabis advocates. This way, you can find a costume that is current, recognizable, and culturally relevant while still being cannabis adjacent. Better yet, you’ll be sending those all-important signals to other cannabis users when it’s time to step outside for a session.

Celebrity Cannabis Advocates as Halloween Costumes: The Obvious

We can start with those celebrities whose names are frequently linked with cannabis in mainstream culture. While these won’t be the most original costumes, they will be hard to mistake or misunderstand. Just about everyone associates these people with cannabis culture.

Snoop Dogg

You're already watching for him, so let's get it out of the way. The ubiquitous weed celebrity, rapper, and media mogul Snoop Dogg has displayed a sharp and varied fashion sense throughout the years that allows you to take the costume in a number of different directions. Don’t forget that Snoop has been a cannabis entrepreneur for years, with his own celebrated brand of products - get extra crafty and convincing by making your own version of his packaging.

Willie Nelson

Another iconic, braided weed smoker on the other end of the music spectrum is country western and folk maestro Willie Nelson. A pair of long, gray braids, an acoustic guitar, and a red bandana used as a headband are the keystones of this costume. For an authentic detail, make sure the guitar is a nylon-string model that is sufficiently beaten up and filthy to pass as Willie's legendary ax, which he affectionately calls "Trigger."

Pete Davidson

Technically, Pete Davidson counts as an iconic stoner, at least in this current cultural moment. A goofy smile, perfectly messy hair, and a lot of questionable fake tattoos make a good start for an easy costume put together with clothes in your closet.

Sarah Silverman

For women who want to go the “famous stoner comedian” route, Sarah Silverman is one of a few options. She’s probably the most recognizable among A-list female comics. You’ll need a long, deep brown wig if you don’t already have the right hairstyle, a button-down shirt, and a pair of boot-cut jeans.

Jerry Garcia (or Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and more)

We’re lumping all these famously stoned mid-century musicians into a single entry so you can choose the individual you physically resemble the most. From there, throw on your most well-worn t-shirt with a headband and some ratty jeans and call it a day.

Chelsea Handler

For the blonde ladies looking for an easy “famous stoner comedian” look, Chelsea Handler is the move. She’s solidified herself as a cannabis queen with her Instagram posts and her foray into cannabis products, from tailoring custom kits to exploring a brand of her own. A margarita in one hand and one of her signature, classic books in the other is recommended for the look, but not required.

Seth Rogen

As the prototypical stoner comedy star, Seth Rogen has business acumen and an acting resume well beyond weed comedies, so he can certainly stand on his own merits. Still, his love of cannabis is well enough known to place him on our Obvious list, and he is a cannabis entrepreneur with his own highly rated cannabis brand. He has a recognizable "put-together slacker" vibe that can make for a decent Halloween costume if you nail the hair and glasses.

Bob Marley

One important exception to our “famously stoned mid-century musician” category is Bob Marley. His iconic look and vibe are still very much recognizable, especially among cannabis enthusiasts. If you already have dreads and the Rastafari culture behind you (we’d caution against cultural appropriation if you don’t), all you need is the legendary crochet hat, a white tee, and jeans.

Cheech and Chong

Go ahead. We can't stop you. Cheech and Chong are unquestionably iconic. In fact, the big chain Halloween stores still sell sets of Cheech and Chong-inspired costumes, so you don't even have to do the work of putting the individual pieces together. The comedians make an amusing couple's costume, but it's not very original or timely - more classic and expected, but there’s nothing wrong with that!

Elon Musk

Elon is not a legendary stoner by any stretch of the imagination. However, for better or worse, there is a legendary meme based on a screen capture of him smoking cannabis on Joe Rogan’s podcast. That means we’ve reserved a spot on the Obvious list for the recognizable tech businessman. To recreate the meme effectively, wear a black t-shirt that says “Occupy Mars” in white letters in a stencil font.

Celebrity Cannabis Advocates as Halloween Costumes: The Quirky

This next part of our list is a bit of a free-for-all. We’ve included B- and C-listers, fringe figures, and celebrities whose peaks have come and gone.

Kirsten Dunst

While she’s not enjoying the same Hollywood buzz she did a decade or two ago, the talented and accomplished actress gets a shout-out for an iconic quote. Kirsten famously stated that “The world would be a better place if more people smoke marijuana,” to a British magazine. Roles like Marie Antoinette and Mary Jane from Sam Raimi’s take on Spider-Man could make a good Dunst representation. May we suggest a foam mannequin head with a soggy Spider-Man mask attached to your head upside-down so you can recreate the famous kiss-in-the-rain scene all night long?

Wiz Khalifa

While he's currently not threatening the Top 40 charts, Wiz Khalifa is another legendary rapper who has famously turned his love of cannabis into a core element of his brand. This is a good choice for hip-hop aficionados who might feel that being Snoop Dogg for Halloween is a bit obvious and played out. Khalifa isn't quite the household name Snoop is, but his unmistakable style makes a decent basis for a Halloween costume. Plus, his personal cannabis brand makes him a cannabis force to be reckoned with.

Melissa Etheridge

This one is for the ladies who want a costume that includes a guitar but don’t want to go as Willie Nelson. Legendary soft-rocker Melissa Etheridge also thinks cannabis is cool. While she wasn’t known as a stoner artist by any means during the height of her musical fame, she turned to cannabis for help during her breast cancer treatment in the early 2000s. She’s had favorable things to say about it since. For Halloween, pair her iconic leather jacket with a black acoustic guitar and belt out your best rendition of “I’m the Only One.”

Harrison Ford

I don’t think anyone has ever listed Indiana Jones among Hollywood’s iconic stoners. Still, according to his Star Wars co-star and friend Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford’s strain of choice was so strong that she joked about it making her forget most of 1976. We're currently researching the strain for anyone who is curious.

Celebrity Cannabis Advocates as Halloween Costumes: The Unexpected

We’ll finish up our list with surprise stoners and other recognizable figures many people might not associate with cannabis at all. When dressing up as these individuals, you might pair the costume with cannabis or cannabis accessories. That way, you can jump-start conversations where you can sprinkle in the trivia tidbit that your costume’s inspiration is, in fact, a cannabis advocate.

Jennifer Lawrence

J-Law is a huge star who has also been pretty open about her casual use of cannabis. Despite that, she’s much more well known for her peerless acting chops and fun personality than for being a famous stoner. Her many iconic roles make for an array of costume possibilities in a variety of styles.

Lady Gaga

Another celebrity that is too casual a cannabis consumer  to be thrown in the “famous stoner” box, pop icon Lady Gaga has said positive things about cannabis as a creative aid. She’s also promoted cannabis for managing pain, stress, and anxiety. More importantly, her bold and visionary fashion choices provide you with a huge catalog of fun costume ideas.

Woody Harrelson

Woody Harrelson is another name that is perhaps too big to merely be labeled "a weed guy." Fun roles like Natural Born Killers, Zombieland, and Semi-Pro make him a good choice for Halloween. His cannabis advocacy makes him a great candidate for spreading the good word about cannabis.

Kendall Jenner

Kendall has labeled herself "a stoner," and who are we to question her? Her fashion prowess also sets the table for any number of chic costume choices.

Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson

Better known for his impressive boxing career than his love for cannabis, with the launch of Tyson 2.0, Mike Tyson is one of several celebrities who have started their own cannabis brands in recent years. Better yet, he has an iconic face tattoo that makes your Halloween costume hard to mistake.

Ric Flair

Ric Flair

Another celeb turned cannabis brand name, Ric Flair Drip cannabis flower and vapes, just launched this year. Ric, AKA Nature Boy, is known for his over-the-top style. One of the most iconic elements of his larger than life Wrestling presentations were the wide variety of custom-made robes he wore to the ring, with trunks and knee pads to match. Your take may be a bathrobe with a feather boa - who are we to judge?

Miley Cyrus

While she certainly doesn't keep her enjoyment of cannabis a secret (she once said "weed is the best drug on earth"), Miley recently turned some heads when she told Joe Rogan that she was smoking on a regular basis during her Hannah Montana days. In light of that news, you might use a weed-smoking Hannah Montana as an edgy Halloween costume. Alternatively, you could go with one of Miley's memorable looks from her post-Disney career.

Lil Wayne

With the prominence of cannabis in rap music and hip hop culture, it can be hard to draw a line between who is a famous cannabis rapper and who is a famous rapper who happens to also love cannabis. In the case of Lil Wayne, he’s definitely too famous to fall into the former category. Dark sunglasses, face tattoos, and a hoodie makes a good start for getting your Weezy on.
